Off Our Backs

“Off Our Backs” turns the American flag into what it was built on...cotton fields and the people forced to work them. The stripes are rows of cotton, and the slaves picking it make the message direct: the country’s early prosperity came from enslaved labor. The burned edges aren’t symbolic of anything grand; they’re just the rawest and freest part of the process. I let the fire move how it wants before putting it out...remind you of any thing? I Hope for this piece  to make folks feel uncomfortable on purpose, because the foundation of America was, too.
